difference between hardware engineer and software engineer??

Cherlyn Tefera: I am a computer engineering student.There are two extremes: computer science and electrical engineering.Computer Science:Programming. All day long. They usually don't see natural light and eventually become allergic to it. It's programming software in languages like C/C++/Java etc.Electrical Engineering:Very minimal programming requirements. Most work is heavy-duty math and engineering. This involves circuit design/analysis, and lots of calculating.And then, there's Computer Engineering which is a mix between the two. Computer engineers take a heavy workload of computer science to get a healthy base in applications programming, but don't delve so deep into computational theory and proofs. They do a little bit of ci! rcuit analysis, but mostly to understand why the hardware components work the way they do. Mostly, they do low-level programming (assembly language/C) and hardware programming (Verilog/VHDL) which is quite different from C/C++/Java because you're programming connections and wires and stuff onto chips. The difference is that computer science (software engineers) program for computers, but computer engineers (hardware engineers) can ALSO program chips to make mini-computers (like what you'd expect in a gameboy or a car or a robot).So in sum, computer science (software engineering) is mostly sitting in front of a computer and programming. Computer and electrical engineering (hardware engineering) is a lot more problem-solving and math and thinking about the circuits underneath what you're programming.All three careers/majors are comparable in salary. Christiane Cattano: Computer Engineering is a lot like Electrical Engineering, except with a focus on digital circuits; and computer architecture; but not a whole lot of programing (relative to CS). Software Engineering is a lot like Computer Science; mostly programming; and not very much real engineering.

I wouldn't be concerened about how much money you're going to make...just make sure you enjoy what you're doing. Any engineering job will require at a minimum bachelor's degree. It sounds like you don't know what you're getting yourself into. E! arning a bachelor's degree in engineering requires a lot of high level science and math and usually 5 years. The site is designed for middle school aged kids, but it has some good info, no matter what your age is. If you're not interested in engineering, you may want to look into networking. It's related to computers and doesn't require as much school, but I think you can make a decent amount of money....Show more

Alonso Crehan: A good guess would be that a "hardware" engineer designs things like printers, scanners etc and a "software" engineer designs the programs that make them run.
