Coleen Carignan: What sort of entertainment or sporting are you talking about? Things like agility, show jumping, fly ball, and other sports where the animal and person work together can be good for the animal. They get exercise, mental stimulation, and a chance to work with the person. The training should be positive so the animal wants to do it, but this can be done in different ways. Most animals doing these kind of sports have a drive or want to do it and usually don't need much coaxing once they know what to do. Entertainment can mean many things. It could be using animals for TV, movies, or other similar things. It could also be things like circuses, petting zoos, and others where the animals are trained to preform certain things or are used in a way that is more about people and showing off than the animal. Some are treated well and want to preform, but many are not. Many animals do want something to do. As humans, we do use this desire to benefit ourselves (we did! breed it into the animal after all), but it can also benefit the animal. A Border Collie for example needs a job and something to do. Some work on a farm, others do agility or fly ball, while others may be trained to do tricks to work in movies. All of these work with the dogs need to do something and are not harming the dog (assuming good training practices). If the owner of the dog can compete in agility or herding trials, that is more of a perk and something to work towards. I do agility with my rabbits and there are people who think it is cruel. The rabbits do generally love to do it, some just want to keep running the course. Doing the agility gives them exercise and mental stimulation. Preforming at a variety of events gets people to see that rabbits can do things and should not just be stuck in a cage all the time. Some events like visiting retirement homes or hospitals does help the residents and patients see something they might not normally see. Of course, not al! l rabbits enjoy agility, so should not be forced to do it and ! the rabbits should not be over run either. If a rabbit is tired, they are given a break. If they don't travel well, they might be limited in the events they go to to avoid too much stress (most do get used to it and do fine). The use of animals in anything is not black and white. There are many people that care and would not hurt their animal. There will be people who don't care about the animal and events that are not in the best interest of the animal....Show more
