Paul Maymi: Most places will not rent an alto flute - they are far too common, and most professional flutists, if they need one, OWN one. If you find a site that does, and the terms are agreeable to you, then that is your only choice. Someone asked here last week about renting a Basset horn - now THAT is rarer, there are very few reasonably-priced ones around, and so people DO rent them for the very few times they are going to use them. If you need this for a specific gig, and the gig pay will cover the cost of rental PLUS your time, then fine. If this is just to fool around with, then buy a decent one - used if you can - and then sell it if you tire of it. I bought a cheap bass flute the same way - I play it seldom, I have not professional NEED of it, I pay little pro insurance on it each year, I let my students use it, and when I tire of it lying here, I will sell it - and it will have been a LOT cheaper for me renting one for that long. If you are going to BUY an ! alto, get a curved head, and get a decent one - a poor one is a frustration to play....Show more
